Joe’s NYC Bar is an interactive, improvisational, immersive theatre experience set in a New York City bar,
created by Christian Kelty.
Joe’s debuted as a part of the 2001 Orlando International Fringe Festival, with seven performances, all sold out!
There were 10 incarnations of Joe’s over the span of 3 years, from 2001 to 2004. During the initial run of Joe’s,
over 6,000 tickets were sold to audience members: 10 episodes, 76 performances and 43 sold out shows.
Joe’s has employed over one hundred of Orlando’s finest actors, musicians, and visual artists who helped bring the
show to life. After a ten year absence, Joe’s NYC Bar was resurrected in March of 2015, and returned to the
2016 Orlando Fringe to positive reviews and sold out shows AND celebrated Joe’s 100th performance at the close
of the Orlando festival.
The success of the show propelled the production to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August of 2016, where the show was performed 23 times in 24 days, and experienced by over 1500 patrons. Joe’s also gained critical success, with several 4 and 5 star reviews. Joe’s NYC Bar closed the festival being named by
‘The List’ as one of the top 100 shows of the festival (#80), out of over 3000 productions. Joe’s returned to Edinburgh in 2017 for a full month – this time performing 2 shows per day for the full festival, totaling 50 shows in less than 30 days.
The intimate nature of the show keeps seating limited, which is important for audience interaction and the unique, personalized show experience. Joe’s is an ensemble of creative and dedicated people. A critical character in Joe’s NYC Bar is the space in which the show is performed. From 2001-2004, the show was performed in an abandoned building, where the Joe’s team built out a custom bar environment. For Joe’s return in 2015, Joe’s partnered with an established bar (St. Matthew’s Tavern in Orlando, Florida). Once again, a custom set was created to give the audience the feel of being in an authentic New York City bar. The partnership was incredibly lucrative for both the bar and the production – the bar exceeded standard sales during that time
by over 600%. In addition, we brought in a large number of unique customers.
The bar went on to become a successful Orlando Fringe venue in both 2015 and 2016. Fringe patrons continue to be customers at St. Matthew’s Tavern.
The cast of Joe’s includes some of Central Florida’s finest professional actors; versed in theater, film, television and radio. The cast has experience on stage at Disney World, Universal Studios, Mad Cow Theater, Orlando Shakespeare, SAK Theater, the Orlando International Fringe Festival, and have performed on national and international stages. And, because any good New York City bar thrives on the live performances of talented musicians, Joe’s has featured unique musical performances during each show – culling from the best local talent as well as nationally recognized bands.
